Food for Good
Welcome to The Kitchen; a farm to table catering business, artisanal wholesale bread company, and culinary education center.

Cater your event and do good works at the same time!

The Kitchen joins Firebox Restaurant (Connecticut Magazine’s 2009 winner for best Hartford County restaurant) as the newest addition to our urban farm to table movement.

Working closely with the culinary staff at Firebox, and using seasonally grown herbs and produce from our Garden, The Kitchen offers a unique catering menu.

Centrally located near the Connecticut State Capitol and Hartford’s downtown offices, The Kitchen works with local purveyors and vendors to create innovative, fresh and memorable menus for business breakfasts, lunch, dinners, and special occasions.

YOUR PLACE OR OURS?
Catering can be full service delivery or in our own turn-key catering venue, a beautiful 2,600 square foot renovated space—in and of itself a well-designed, sleek and comfortable setting for a wide range of functions.

TAKE A CLASS/CREATE YOUR OWN CLASS
And come take a class at the Kitchen! Chefs from the Kitchen, Firebox and surrounding restaurants teach everything from seasonal appetizers to chocolate in our brand new facility. Contact us for the most recent calendar.

OUR FARM TO TABLE MOVEMENT
But the Kitchen at Billings Forge is so much more. The farm to table movement in our neighborhood is creating opportunities in one of the most economically challenged communities in the nation. Set within a brick factory complex converted to mixed income housing, our programs have the goal of helping the residents of Billings Forge, their neighbors in Frog Hollow and an entire community by providing employment, education, access to healthy food, and a  connection to the environment through an emphasis on hands-on experience, community interaction, and the pleasures of the table.

WHAT ARE WE DOING FOR THE COMMUNITY
What does this mean? Well, 30% of our employees at Firebox hail from Frog Hollow.

Produce from our gardens are used in enrichment cooking classes for local residents. Our neighbors built our garden beds and help tend the garden. Our Farmers Market is one of the only ones in the state to accept WIC and SNAP coupons. And the Kitchen itself is providing paid culinary training that includes not only kitchen and baking skills but access to computer learning, job readiness skills, and resume creation. Click on the mission link above to find out how you can get involved.

So come do good and eat well!
